MARRIAGE AMONG RELATIVES INCREASES FOETAL ABNORMALITIES
This is the case of repeated deaths of new born babies of a consanguineous couple (relationship by descent from the same ancestor)
The couple were first cousins and unfortunately had 3 incidence of neonatal death .
The chromosome analysis showed a minor abnormality in both the parents, even though they appeared perfectly normal .The same abnormality seen in both of them was detected in the result of the dead babies .
Now they have come to us for donor sperm or donor egg treatment. But there are still chances for abnormalities , although less , as they will still be using 1 gamete with the problem .They may still have chance for normal living child, but cannot guarantee , how many times they will have to try.
Generally the incidence of such issues are high in consanguineous marriages , which is highly prevalent in south Indian states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh .
Genetic testing and counseling is a very important aspect of infertility treatment , as most of the time , the failure to attain pregnancy or premature births are the consequence of genetic problems
