For optimal results, the woman should not be more than twenty percent over her ideal body weight. Women between the ages of 40-43 are considered for IVF on an individual basis based on previous testing, such as FSH levels and/or responses to gonadotropin therapy. In vitro fertilization (IVF) involves several steps — ovulation induction, egg retrieval, sperm retrieval, fertilization and embryo transfer. One cycle of IVF can take about two weeks, and more than one cycle may be required.
