Unrealistic expectations

It is often a devastating and a life changing experience for a woman to discover that for one reason or another she cannot become pregnant and have children of her own. In some cases, the initial shock of being told such news sends couples into complete denial and mistrust of science and nature. This is a deafening time in a woman’s existence, as in theory we have all been taught one of our duties as woman is to reproduce, easily, quickly and without any problem. Infertility or being ‘barren’ was and still is rarely ever spoken of due to the huge stigma placed on those that could not conceive. It is an age old tale, one dating back to the biblical era, but in recent years we are seeing more and more cases of infertility. The current statistics mention that 3 in every 10 woman will have either infertility, IVF or some form of treatment to assist in reproduction. This is a frightening number, think about it? What could cause this massive increase in infertility in our day and age? Is it stress, is it non organic food, is it lack of exercise? Chemicals, pollution? The list is never ending, and although I strongly believe all factors have an influence the most common factor we know of and hear of, is age. Age is the number 1 factor and cause of infertility in woman, this has been proven. Unfortunately it is no longer only our duty as woman to reproduce, we now need to have the added pressure of obtaining a degree, travel the world, have a career, become successful, in the meantime meet a suitable lifelong partner, marry him and then have children all before 25?? Which is supposedly the prime fertile age. How are we supposed to achieve this? The answer is simple, we don’t and thus the serge of infertility. Although this all sounds depressing, and stressful and sends alarm bells ringing on our biological clock, I am here to tell you that although there are such high unrealistic expectations, there are options and solutions, ways to prevent our eggs from aging, methods and treatments created by woman (and men) to assist us in reproducing, conceiving, carrying healthy baby’s to term, and then if all else fails, there are further options such as surrogacy. There are so many options, we as strong, independent, career driven wanting to have it all woman, we have options! This is the best news, there is no more pressure, we have time and you have options. In my next blog I will begin to analyze , explain and give you my view on the different options out there.
