What is PGT-A?
PGT-A or preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies is a genetic test performed on embryos produced through IVF. PGT-A gives information about embryos’ genetic health to help your care team select the best embryo for transfer and improve your chance of achieving a successful pregnancy. PGT-A was formerly known as PGS, preimplantation genetic screening.
what is chromosome aneuploidy means?
Chromosomes are structures that carry human genetic information. Normal embryo cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes. In each pair, there is one maternal and one paternal chromosome. Abnormalities in the early development of the spermatozoon, egg or the embryo itself may result in the incorrect number of chromosomes in the embryo. Such an embryo is called aneuploid embryo. Aneuploidy is a leading cause of infertility, in vitro fertility failure, termination of the first trimester of pregnancy, and the development of many genetic pathologies, many of which are incompatible with life and some are compatible with life. (Example: Down Syndrome) Only an embryo containing a normal number of chromosomes (the euploid embryo) has a chance of successfully completing a normal pregnancy.
How PGT-A is tested?
Embryos are produced through an IVF cycle. A few cells are carefully removed from the part of the embryo that will form the placenta. Samples are sent to the laboratory while your embryos remain safe at our clinic.
Why you need PGT – A?
PGT – A allows the identification of embryos of normal chromosomal composition. Embryos most likely to result in success are selected for transfer or can be frozen for future use.
Who needs PGT-A?
PGT - A may be used in any IVF patient, although it is important for women of high reproductive age (more than 35 years), as egg quality decreases and the risk of developing chromosomally inferior (aneuploid) embryos increases. Embryo Screening Increases Successful IVF Solution in Patients With miscarriages, Failed attempts of IVF, Patients With Chromosomal Abnormalities, Reduces the Number of Repeated IVF cycles, Provides the best opportunity to transfer only 1 embryo which reduces the risks of multiple pregnancies and related obstetric complications.
