How A Doula Can Support Your Surrogacy Journey
Nici Shipway
Doula
Happy new year, wonderful surrogates and families. As promised, here is my first "ask a doula" post.
Having a doula support you through this sacred time is beneficial for all parties involved. Not only will a doula help educate you about childbirth and point you in the right directions for neutral information you may seek but also help you to feel empowered and confident about your upcoming labor and birth. She will stay with you for the entirety of your labor to support you emotionally and physically by using non medical teqniques such as massage, hip compression, counter pressure, acupressure, rebozo, hypnobirthing, etc. There have been studies showing incredible data on how a doula can change the outcome of your birth with far less intervention such as epidural and cesarean births, as well as shortining the length of labor. This is your birth. It should be a positive experience. For parents during the labor and birth the doula can explain to them any information that may concern them.As well as offering notional support.
A doula would be especially helpful for both sides in the postpartum period. There is physical and sometimes emotional healing that needs to happen on the surrogate mothers part and a doula would be an amazing support in this time.
For parents a doula can be a very helpful resource for when baby gets home. They know how to care for newborns and can show you if you are in any need of assistance. There is also an emotional aspect when your identity changes to be mommy or daddy. No matter how your baby came to you. That is also a transition that your doula can support you through.
If you have any questions please feel free to drop me an email.
