This journey has been a long time in the making. I knew I wanted to be a part of this unique and wonderful process, and so I started where everyone else does...research. What is a surrogate? What's the difference between traditional and gestation surrogacy, and is it better to be an agency or independent surrogate? Does my state even allow this? Thankfully, I had access to wonderful people and resources. I elected to work with an agency in Oregon first, despite its distance from my actual home state. They were a smaller agency, but they took care of me every step of the way; and there were a million steps: medical records reviews, psych testing, home photos/visits, partner interviews, medical testing. It was a lot more paperwork than I ever knew possible for one task. I had even become matched with a couple...right before the pandemic hit. Their international status put an immediate halt to the entire proceedings, and the financial and structural blow to the agency was more than it was able to handle. When the owner delivered the news, we were all heartbroken by the news. To this day, I still keep in touch with my former agency representative, as she has always been a source of support for me. I remember being distraught by the idea that this was over for me, and I considered giving up. My friend even said that it might be a sign to drop the idea entirely, but I held onto this life goal of mine and am glad that I did.
Due to the status of travel at the time, I researched more local agencies. I found one in my home state and began the interviewing process again. I was elated when I was accepted into their agency and able to continue my first journey. It was not long before a perfect match made its way to me.
